Crime Overload
by
After I finished rewatching The Mandalorian, I put my Star Wars rewatch briefly on hold to try to watch some other things, but I’m having trouble finding something I really want to watch. I’ve realized how many TV series, the vast majority, are about crime and police. Even on PBS it’s largely crime and cops (just in foreign countries), and that’s not really what I want. I think I’ve seen most of the series that aren’t in that category and I’m trying to watch something new.
I’ve been watching bits of Daredevil off and on. I like the idea behind the series and I like the main characters, but that series is so violent that it’s hard for me to watch. That’s definitely a background noise to knitting show, and it’s still at heart about crime, though the cops generally aren’t the good guys.
There are all the Star Trek series, I guess. I haven’t yet finished Picard (I made it through the first two seasons, but the second season got rid of the parts of the first season I liked) and I didn’t watch Discovery, so I guess that gives me something I could catch up on.
I’ve gone back to Miss Scarlet on PBS. I started watching the series back when it was Miss Scarlet and the Duke, but ended up bailing because I didn’t like him at all and she got on my nerves. I’m trying picking up where the new police inspector shows up. I like him a lot better, but she still annoys me. They’re trying so hard to make her some kind of “girl boss” but also frequently make her Too Stupid to Live (while she thinks she’s brilliant), where she forges ahead, thinking she knows best, only to end up being wrong or getting in trouble. They seem to have toned her down a little bit now, so she isn’t too insufferable, and the cop is reasonable in how he does and doesn’t work with her. If all else fails, there are nice Victorian costumes.
I think a lot of my problem right now is that I don’t want really high tension. That may be why I keep going back to things I’ve already seen. If I know what will happen, I can get through the tense parts with the awareness that it will all work out okay.
I’ll have to see what other costume dramas are on PBS, if there are any that aren’t crime-related that I haven’t seen or if there are any I haven’t seen in long enough that they count as new. I guess what I want is light adventure, though that would be really hard to pull off, just enough tension to make it interesting without making it hard to watch. Or something that’s sort of a comedy drama, like The Durrells in Corfu.
Or maybe this is a time to watch half-hour comedies, since it’s light outside so late. I’ve been working in the yard and picking berries until after 8, then by the time I take a shower I don’t have a lot of time until bedtime. I’m almost done with rewatching Community, so maybe I’ll revisit Parks and Recreation or The Good Place, or see if there’s one I missed.
